Discovering the Intimate Character of Our Heavenly Father
As we journey through life, we often find ourselves in need of guidance, provision, peace, healing, and protection. But did you know that our loving Father has a unique name that corresponds to each of these needs? In the 23rd Psalm, we find a beautiful portrayal of God’s character, revealing His intimate and personal nature as our Shepherd.
The Shepherd Who Knows Our Name
The Lord is my Shepherd – Jehovah-Rohi. This name reminds us that our Shepherd knows us by name and desires to communicate with us personally. Take a moment to thank Him for His intimate relationship with you and ask Him to reveal more of Himself to you.
The Provider Who Meets Our Every Need
I shall lack nothing – Jehovah-Jireh. Our good Shepherd provides all our needs, beginning with redemption. Thank Him for carrying our worries, burdens, and cares, and ask Him to speak to you about His provision in your life.
The Peace That Transcends Circumstances
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters – Jehovah-Shalom. Thank Jesus, our Peace, for His attention to the details of your life. Ask Him to speak to you and reveal Himself more clearly in your daily experiences.
The Healer Who Understands Our Pain
He restores my soul – Jehovah-Rapha. Because Jesus, our Healer, became man, He understands everything we’ve experienced. Thank Him for healing our hurts and remember His times of restoration in your life.
The Righteous One Who Guides Us
He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake – Jehovah-Tsidkenu. Thank the Righteous One that you are accepted in Him and completely forgiven. Ask Him to guide your life according to His will and for His glory.
The God Who Is Always Present
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me – Jehovah-Shammah. Thank God who is always present with you, dispelling all fear. Your Shepherd is always there for you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you.
The Loving Authority That Comforts Us
Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Thank God for His loving authority in your life, disciplining, correcting, and giving you the security of loving limits. Thank Him that you can never mess up so badly that you fear punishment by Him.
The Banner of Victory That Strengthens Us
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies – Jehovah-Nissi. Thank your Banner for His strength and protection against the enemy. Thank Him that Jesus lives victorious in you, giving you the power to overcome.
The Shepherd Who Anoints and Overflows
You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows. Thank your Shepherd for His grace and favor that He gives you so generously. Thank Him that you can enjoy fellowship with Him and experience His goodness and love following you all the days of your life.
The Faithful God Who Dwells with Us
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Thank your Shepherd that you can continuously sense His presence because of His faithfulness. Worship Him with a song that speaks of His nearness and love.
