Embracing Wholehearted Devotion
When Jesus quoted the ancient scripture “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind” (Luke 10:27), he wasn’t simply asking for a superficial commitment. So, what does it truly mean to love God with every fiber of our being?
Beyond Surface-Level Understanding
At first glance, it’s easy to interpret these words as emotions, spirit, body, and intellect. However, a deeper exploration reveals that the original language and cultural context paint a more nuanced picture. Scholars debate the exact meaning, with some arguing that these terms aren’t meant to compartmentalize human nature, while others see them as interconnected or hierarchical.
The Heart of the Matter
One insightful perspective suggests that God desires our unconditional surrender, our “everything.” This resonates with the story of young King Josiah, who “turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might” (2 Kings 23:25). Josiah’s wholehearted devotion serves as a powerful example, demonstrating that true commitment goes beyond mere resolutions or checklists.
Rethinking Our Approach
As we begin a new year, we’re often tempted to set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. While these principles have their value, I wonder if God is more concerned with our willingness to surrender everything to Him, rather than achieving specific outcomes. By focusing on being His person, we shift the emphasis from our success to His lordship.
A Prayer of Surrender
Thank you, God, for creating us with the capacity to love and obey You in diverse ways. Be my strength and comfort as I strive to make You Lord of my world. Amen.
A Practical Step Forward
Take a moment to reflect on how you can practically give God your all. What area of your life needs surrender? What step can you take today to deepen your devotion?
