What It Means to Be Truly Blessed

The True Source of Blessing

A remarkable encounter between Jesus and a woman in the crowd reveals a profound truth about what it means to be blessed. As Jesus teaches, the woman interrupts, exclaiming, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!” (Luke 11:27). Her words convey her deep admiration and love for Jesus, implying that being his mother, Mary, is the greatest blessing imaginable.

A Shift in Perspective

However, Jesus gently corrects her, saying, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!” (Luke 11:28). This response highlights that Mary’s blessing didn’t stem from carrying and raising Jesus, but from her willingness to hear and obey God’s word. This subtle yet crucial distinction has far-reaching implications for our understanding of what it means to be blessed.

The Heart of Obedience

God doesn’t value us based on our achievements or grand callings. Rather, He looks at our heart, seeking a willing servant who listens and responds to His voice. This is exemplified in Mary’s humble declaration, “I am the Lord’s servant, May it be to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38). Her obedience, not her role as Jesus’ mother, is what truly blesses her.

Walking Closely with God

As we reflect on our own lives, we must ask: Am I positioned to hear and obey God’s specific word for me? Do I respond with a willing heart, trusting in His divine guidance? The blessing comes not from our accomplishments, but from our intimacy with God, as we move in tandem with His whispers and shouts.

A Prayer of Surrender

Today, let us pray with a surrendered heart: “Thank You, Father, that You value my willing heart and my obedience. Speak to me today, Lord. Your servant is listening. Amen.” As we posture ourselves in obedience, we can trust that God will guide us, and in doing so, we will experience the true source of blessing.
