The Unwavering Nature of God’s Love
A Love That Defies Human Understanding
When Paul writes that “love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV), he uses a verb that paints a vivid picture of a flower’s demise – falling to the ground, withering, and decaying. In stark contrast, God’s love stands as a permanent, unshakeable force that never falters.
Eternal and Unconditional
Unlike human love, which is often fleeting and conditional, God’s love is eternal. It “will last forever” (NLT), “never dies” (MSG), and “never ends” (RSV). This love is not bound by the limitations of human relationships, where our feelings can be influenced by the people around us. God’s love is not regulated by our actions, appearance, or personalities. It is an unwavering, uncaused, and spontaneous force that originates from within Him.
A Love That Is Not Earned
John reminds us that “this is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us” (1 John 4:10 NIV). This truth brings comfort, as God’s love does not hinge on our goodness, kindness, or faith. He loves us because of His own goodness, kindness, and great faith. Our love does not increase or decrease His love for us. His love is not enhanced by our strengths or diluted by our weaknesses.
A Love That Chooses Us
Moses’ words to Israel echo God’s sentiment towards us: “The LORD did not choose you and lavish his love on you because you were larger or greater than other nations… It was simply because the LORD loves you” (Deuteronomy 7:7-8 NLT). God loves us simply because He has chosen to do so. He loves us when we don’t feel lovely, when others abandon us, and when we’re at our weakest.
A Promise of Unfailing Love
God’s promise is clear: “I have loved you, my people, with an everlasting love. With unfailing love I have drawn you to myself” (Jeremiah 31:3 NLT). He calls nobodies and makes them somebodies; He calls the unloved and makes them beloved (Romans 9:25 MSG). This is His promise – a love that will never fail, never waver, and never come to an end.
