Unlocking the Power of Prayer
The Promise of Answered Prayers
Do you ever feel like your prayers are falling on deaf ears? You’re not alone. Many Christians struggle with the idea that God doesn’t answer their prayers. But what does the Bible say about this? In Matthew 7:7-8, Jesus promises, “Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
A Challenge to Faith
During a Bible study, a group of Christians, including Amy, who had been a believer her whole life, shared their frustration with unanswered prayers. They wondered if prayer was just an exercise in futility. But Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:7-8 challenged them to re-examine their understanding of prayer.
Qualifications for Prayer
To have our prayers answered, Jesus says we must abide in Him and His Word must abide in us (John 15:7). Additionally, the Scripture reminds us that if we harbor sin in our hearts, God will not hear us (Psalm 66:18). So, what are the conditions for effective prayer? We must:
- Make Jesus Christ the Lord of our lives
- Be filled with the Holy Spirit
- Confess and repent of sin
- Pray according to God’s will, as revealed in His Word
- Pray specifically, with a pure motive
Expecting Answers
When we meet these conditions, we can expect God to hear and answer our prayers. It’s not just about going through the motions; we must enter into an expectant spirit of prayer, knowing that God is faithful to His promises. The Bible reminds us that if we ask anything according to God’s will, He hears us and answers (1 John 5:14-15).
A Life-Changing Experience
As the Bible study group applied these principles, they began to experience the power of prayer in their lives. Within weeks, they saw specific answers to their prayers, and their faith was renewed. God had truly heard them, and they were inspired to continue praying with expectation.
Today’s Challenge
Take a moment to review your spiritual walk. Ask yourself:
- Is Jesus Christ the Lord of my life?
- Am I filled with the Holy Spirit?
- Is there unconfessed sin in my life?
- Am I praying according to God’s Word?
- Am I praying specifically, with a pure motive?
As you meet God’s conditions, expect your prayers to be answered, because God promises they will be.
