Uncovering the Surprising Secret to True Greatness

The Unlikely Candidate for Greatest Person

When asked who the greatest person who ever lived is, many names come to mind – Moses, King David, the Apostle Paul, or Abraham Lincoln. But what about John the Baptist? Jesus himself declared, “Among those born of women, no one has risen greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). But what made John so extraordinary?

A Humble Beginning

John wasn’t born into royalty; his parents were a common, elderly couple. He faced rejection and persecution, ultimately leading to his tragic death. Despite living in isolation, he fearlessly confronted people about their sin and lived a life separate from the norms of society. Yet, he didn’t become a priest like his father.

A Miraculous Birth

Gabriel announced John’s birth to Zacharias, proclaiming he would be “great in the eyes of the Lord.” John was destined to prepare the way for the Messiah, pointing many to Christ. Moreover, Gabriel declared that John would be filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother’s womb, indicating God’s total control over his life.

The Greatest Influence

While others, including his godly mother and a wicked woman who orchestrated his death, had an impact on John’s life, the Holy Spirit was the greatest influence. It was God who made John “great.”

Redefining Greatness

Jesus continued, “Notwithstanding, he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he” (Matthew 11:11). This statement reveals that greatness isn’t determined by human influences, family background, or achievements. True greatness is measured by what God has done in our lives.

Seeking Spiritual Greatness

It doesn’t matter if we’re considered “the least,” “greater than,” or “the greatest.” What matters is seeking to be filled with God’s Spirit, allowing Him to have total control over our lives. When we do, we’re considered “great in the eyes of the Lord.” Our worth and glory come from what God is making us to be.
