Nourished by the River of Life
In the midst of life’s challenges, there exists a profound promise of sustenance and growth. Like a tree planted near streams, we can bear fruit in season and flourish, our leaves never withering, and every project succeeding (Psalms 1:3, NJB).
The Source of Life
This life-giving river originates from the throne of God, flowing down the celestial main street and into the hearts of believers (Revelation 22). It then overflows from within those united with Jesus, becoming streams of living water (John 7). The river whispers an invitation, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink” (John 7:37, NIV).
Abiding in the River
As we respond to this call, we begin to feel the river’s refreshing presence, its moisture hanging cool in the air. We stretch out to reach its edge, drawn to dwell within its life-giving waters. The river beckons us to dig deep, to develop determined roots, and to inch closer to the source of life.
Counsel from Deep unto Deep
In this state of abiding, our counsel comes from deep unto deep. Rooted in the river, we stand firm against life’s storms and savor sweetness in times of drought. Without this foundation, we risk being blown away or burned up by the harsh realities of life.
Fruitful Living
Nourished by the river of life, we produce fruit that reflects the character of God: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23a, NIV). As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, we rely on the river’s sustenance to flourish (John 15:4, NKJV).
A Life of Purpose
In the river, we find direction and purpose. We are no longer driven by cynicism or drained by sin, but instead, we overflow with Jesus’ joy. As we abide in the river, we hear its song, “Abide in Me, and I in you” (John 15:4, NKJV), guiding us toward a life of eternal significance.
