The Ultimate Act of Love
A Sacrifice That Changed Everything
Jesus Christ’s selfless act of laying down His life for us is the epitome of love. As 1 John 3:16 so eloquently states, “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” This profound sacrifice was not just a momentary act, but a demonstration of the Father’s unwavering love for humanity.
A Separation Like No Other
In a move that would forever alter the course of history, the Father turned His face away from His dying Son. This complete and utter separation was a price paid for our redemption. As 1 John 3:1 declares, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” This elaborate plan, orchestrated by the Father, was designed to make us His children.
The Struggle to Love
So, why do we, as God’s children, struggle to love one another? Why do we cling to our desires, plans, and wants, rather than laying them down for our fellow Christians? Why do we often prioritize self-interest over servant-heartedness? Jesus set the ultimate example by refusing to exploit His equality with God the Father. He chose humility, servanthood, and sacrifice.
The Consequences of Self-Focus
When we harbor resentment, refuse to forgive, and live as though it’s all about us, we diminish the value of the gift. We undermine the sacrifice. We belittle the price paid for our redemption. As John 4:11 reminds us, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
A Heartfelt Confession
Lord, I confess that it’s easy to proclaim my love for You, only to turn around and mistreat my brother or sister in Christ. It’s not what I say, but what I do, that proves my love for You. Forgive my self-centeredness, my tendency to hold onto past hurts. Grant me a heart of forgiveness and love. May my words and actions be a true reflection of You. Amen.
Reflecting the Father’s Heart
As we strive to emulate the Father’s love, let us remember that true love is not just a feeling, but a choice. A choice to lay down our lives, our desires, and our interests for the sake of others. A choice to forgive, to serve, and to love without condition. May our lives be a testament to the ultimate act of love, and may we, in turn, lavish love on those around us.
