Surrendering to God’s Will: The Secret to Joyful Generosity

Embracing the Art of Generous Living

As we navigate the ups and downs of life, it’s easy to get caught up in our own exhaustion and forget the true source of our strength. In 2 Corinthians 8:5, Paul reminds us that our generosity is not about our own abilities, but about surrendering to God’s will. “They gave themselves first of all to the Lord, and then by the will of God also to us.” This simple yet profound principle has the power to transform our approach to giving.

The Busyness of Life

Lately, my home has been filled with extra people and extra needs. While it’s a blessing to be able to serve those we love, it can be overwhelming. As I read Paul’s words, “see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7), I couldn’t help but feel a sense of inadequacy. When we’re tired, it’s easy to feel like we’re not exceling in anything, let alone generosity.

The Secret to Abundant Giving

But then I returned to verse 5: “They gave themselves first to the Lord, and then to others.” Ah, the simplicity of it all! Before we can give to others, we must first give ourselves to God. We must dip into the well of His presence, drawing on His resources and strength. It’s only then that we can truly excel in the grace of giving.

Drawing from the Well

As I reflect on this principle, I’m reminded of the importance of prioritizing my relationship with God. When I rush past Him and try to do things in my own strength, I inevitably burn out. But when I take the time to engage with His presence, I’m filled with joy and enabled to give generously. Lord God, forgive me when I forget to come to You first. Remind me to dip into Your deep well, and then I will go and give out of the abundance I’ve received.

A Life of Joyful Generosity

What a difference it makes when we put God first! We’re no longer limited by our own resources, but can give freely and abundantly. As we surrender to His will, we experience the joy of giving, and our lives become a reflection of His love. Thank you, Lord, for your goodness and generosity. May we always remember to come to You first, that we may give ourselves fully to others. Amen.
