The Art of Imitation: A Path to Spiritual Growth
In the words of the Apostle Paul, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1) This powerful message encourages us to follow in the footsteps of those who have walked the path of faith before us.
A Young Ambassador’s Example
I still remember Charles, the bright-eyed and energetic son of an African ambassador. Even as a young boy, he had a natural charm that won over everyone around him. At a backyard barbecue, he effortlessly played a game of toss-and-catch with a man three times his age and height, perfectly mimicking every move. It was clear that his parents had taught him well, instilling in him the confidence to navigate adult situations with ease.
Learning from Those Around Us
As Charles grew older, he was often invited to attend formal social events, where he would observe and learn from the adults around him. One evening, at a lavish embassy gathering, I watched in awe as he mingled with the guests, dressed impeccably in a miniature waiter’s uniform, complete with a perfectly knotted tie. He carried himself with poise, nodding to acquaintances and responding politely to questions. It was as if he had completed a course in dinner party etiquette.
The Power of Immersion
So, how did Charles acquire such remarkable social skills? The answer lies in his immersion in a lifestyle that valued excellence. He had watched his parents and other adults in similar positions, observing how they made a difference in the world. By imitating their examples, he learned to navigate complex social situations with ease.
Becoming Ambassadors for Christ
As followers of Christ, we are called to be ambassadors, representing our faith in the world. To fulfill this calling, we need training and preparation. Much of this preparation involves on-site imitation, watching and learning from those who have gone before us. We study the Bible, seeking guidance on how to relate to the world around us. We draw mental maps of how to live out our faith, following the examples of men and women who have done it well.
Mixing with the Crowds
Like Charles, we learn to mix with people from all walks of life, drawing them to the Perfect One we imitate. We won’t have all the answers, but as we navigate the complexities of life, we can trust that our faith will shine through. By imitating Christ, we become beacons of hope, inspiring others to follow in our footsteps.
