The Unrelenting Passion of God’s Love
A Love That Will Not Share
The Bible says, “God is jealous” (Nahum 1:2). This might seem like a surprising attribute of God, but it reveals the depth of His passion for us. If He has chosen you, then He cannot bear the thought of you choosing another. His love is not a casual affection; it’s an all-consuming fire that desires complete devotion.
The Price of Redemption
God purchased you with His own blood, and He cannot tolerate the idea of you living apart from Him or belonging to this world. His love is so intense that He would rather die than see you perish. Anything that stands between your heart’s love and Himself is an affront to His jealousy.
A Trust That Must Not Be Divided
God is jealous of your trust. He will not permit you to trust in any mere human being or rely on your own wisdom. When you lean on Him, He is glad, but when you transfer your dependence to another, He is displeased. He weeps when you settle for a broken jug instead of drinking from His overflowing fountain.
The Desire for Exclusivity
God is also jealous of your company. He desires to be in constant conversation with you, more than anyone else. True love is living with Him alone; anything less is too painful for our Lord. He sends trials to wean our hearts from worldly things and fix them more closely on Himself.
A Comforting Jealousy
This jealousy, which intends to keep us near to Christ, can be a tremendous comfort to us. If God cares about our love so much, we can be sure that He will do nothing to harm us and will protect us from our enemies.
A Reflection of Our Own Hearts
While God’s jealousy is righteous, our own jealousy often is not. We might be jealous of how God has chosen to bless others. Have you been jealous of anyone lately? Take a moment to reflect on your heart and ask yourself: am I keeping my heart pure for my beloved Lord alone?
A Sacred Jealousy
May we shut our eyes to all the distractions of the world and keep our hearts pure for our Lord alone, with a sacred jealousy that honors His unrelenting passion for us.
