From Chaos to Peace: A Simple Path to Gentle Parenting

Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos

As a parent, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of daily life. The stress and pressure can sometimes lead us to react in ways we later regret. Susan, a frazzled mom, found herself yelling at her kids more often than she’d like to admit. One day, while sipping a much-needed cup of coffee, she stumbled upon a profound Bible verse that made her pause: “A soft answer turns away anger, but harsh words stir it up.” (Proverbs 15:1)

The Power of Self-Reflection

Susan realized that she had been using harsh words and a raised voice to stir up her children, rather than responding with gentleness and kindness. She knew she needed to make a change, but it wouldn’t be easy. As Christians, we strive to model godly character, but we’re not immune to the challenges of daily life.

A Simple yet Powerful Exercise

So, how can we move from reacting to responding in a way that honors God? Try this simple exercise: stand in the center of a hula-hoop and hold it around your waist. This circle represents your area of control – your thoughts, feelings, ideas, passions, decisions, and words. Now, envision a larger circle outside the hula-hoop, representing other people’s thoughts, emotions, decisions, and words. You have no control over this circle, only influence.

Taking Responsibility

Take a moment to reflect on what’s been happening inside your hula-hoop this week. Have you been reacting to life’s pressures with anger, frustration, or harsh words? Invite Jesus into those areas of your life where you’re struggling. He will give you the strength you need to respond with gentleness and kindness.

The Freedom of Letting Go

When you focus on your own reactions and responses, you’ll be less inclined to try to control the decisions and actions of others. You’ll become more aware of the gentle influence you can have on those around you. By tending to your own heart and mind, you’ll be able to walk in a freshness of spirit that will positively impact all your relationships.

Transforming Reactions into Responses

By the power of the Holy Spirit, you can turn your reactions into chosen responses. It’s a journey, not a destination. As you learn to respond with kindness, gentleness, and love, you’ll find peace in the midst of chaos. So, take a deep breath, grab a hula-hoop, and start responding with the character of Jesus.
