Thriving in the Drought
As I gaze out at the parched landscape of my hometown in the western United States, I’m reminded of the importance of resilience. The lack of snowfall and meager spring rainfall have left the earth cracked and dry, with fire danger lurking around every corner. Yet, amidst the desolate backdrop, I catch glimpses of vibrant green oases – lush lawns that seem to defy the odds. What’s the secret to their vitality?
Unwavering Trust
The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream” (Jeremiah 17:7-8). This passage speaks to the heart of our struggle: how to remain “ever green” in the face of discouragement, drought, and fiery trials.
Self-Awareness: The Foundation of Growth
Just as a skilled gardener must understand the soil, we too must confront our own makeup. David Benner notes, “Genuine self-knowledge begins by looking at God and noticing how God is looking at us… God loves each and every one of us with depth, persistence, and intensity beyond imagination.” This radical acceptance is the starting point for spiritual growth.
Tilling the Soil of Our Hearts
Soil preparation is crucial for a thriving lawn, and the same principle applies to our spiritual lives. We must be willing to dig deep, removing the debris of sin and shame. Confessing our wrongdoing is only the first step; we must also uncover the underlying patterns and tendencies that lead us astray. As Benner puts it, “Discovering our core sin tendencies is helpful because it lets us deal with our problems at their root.”
Nourishing Our Roots
A lush lawn requires the right balance of fertilizer and water – both of which demand time and effort. Similarly, spiritual growth necessitates intentional investment. We must carve out time to sit quietly with the Lord, listening for His whispers, and diligently study the Bible, seeking answers to our deepest questions. The question is, am I willing to spare no time or expense in my pursuit of becoming an “ever green” Christian?
Cultivating Abundant Living
As I reflect on the vibrant lawns that dot our city’s landscape, I’m reminded that spiritual growth is a lifelong process. It requires patience, dedication, and a willingness to confront our own weaknesses. But the reward is well worth the effort: a life that flourishes even in the most challenging seasons, bearing fruit that brings glory to God.
