Redefining Family: Finding True Belonging in God
We’ve all fantasized about having a picture-perfect family, just like the Waltons. But Jesus never had such expectations. Instead, he redefined what family means: “Those who do God’s will are my true brothers and sisters, my mother” (Mark 3:35). When his own brothers didn’t share his convictions, he didn’t try to force them. He recognized that his spiritual family could provide what his physical family couldn’t.
Beyond Naive Expectations
We often assume that if we do good, people will treat us right. But the truth is, they may or may not. We can’t control how others respond to us. Even Jesus couldn’t force his family to share his convictions. So, what makes us think we can force ours? The reality is, we have no control over how our family responds to us.
God’s Unconditional Love
Instead of relying on our earthly family for affirmation and encouragement, we can turn to God. He has proven himself to be a faithful Father. As Paul wrote, “You are God’s child, and God will give you the blessing he promised, because you are his child” (Galatians 4:7). If our earthly father doesn’t affirm us, our heavenly Father can take his place. Let God fill the void left by others.
Trusting in God’s Promises
We can’t assure you that your family will ever give you the blessing you seek. But we know that God will. He will give you what your family doesn’t. Rely on him for your affirmation and encouragement. Let God be your Rock, your Comforter, and your Guide.
Embracing Our True Identity
As children of God, we are called to trust in his promises. We are not defined by our earthly family, but by our heavenly Father. Let’s move beyond the naive expectation that our family will meet all our needs. Instead, let’s turn to God, who will give us the blessing he promised, simply because we are his children.
