The Quest for Spiritual Assurance
Across cultures, there’s a deep-seated understanding that a higher power demands appeasement through good deeds, self-denial, and devotion. Yet, a lingering question persists: is it enough?
A Heartfelt Encounter
During my time in Senegal, West Africa, I had the privilege of visiting a dear friend, Fatima, who had just returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca. Her eyes sparkled as she recounted her experiences, from participating in the procession of millions to circling the Ka’aba. However, her enthusiasm was tempered by uncertainty: “If Allah were to call me tonight, I’m not sure if he would receive me into heaven.”
A Universal Longing
Fatima’s dilemma is a universal one. Despite her sincerity and efforts, she couldn’t shake off the feeling that she might not have done enough to secure her place in heaven. This is a concern that transcends cultures and faiths.
The Assurance of Salvation
My daughter’s response to Fatima’s concerns was both gentle and profound: “We can know for sure, Fatima. Should God call me tonight, I know I will go to heaven, not because of the good things I’ve done, but because of what Jesus has done for me.” This assurance stems from the understanding that Jesus Christ is the sole mediator between humanity and God.
The Power of Redemption
The Bible affirms that God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Him (2 Corinthians 5:21, NLT). Christ’s death on the cross paid our sin-debt in full, satisfying the demands of justice and bridging the gap between us and God.
The Path to Forgiveness
While we cannot earn God’s forgiveness and favor, there is a crucial step we must take: repenting of our stubborn independence and surrendering ourselves to Jesus. Only then can we experience the transformative power of His redemption.
A New Birth, A New Life
When we invite Jesus Christ into our lives, He removes the sin barrier between us and God, restoring the personal relationship with the Triune God that Adam and Eve once enjoyed. This new birth leads to a life with a radically different orientation, one that is guided by faith and empowered by God’s love.
A Personal Invitation
As we reflect on our own spiritual journeys, we’re invited to echo the heartfelt prayer: “Come into my heart, Lord Jesus, and take control of my life.” Will you take this step today?
