Finding Peace in God’s Sovereignty: Trusting in His Good Character

Finding Comfort in God’s Sovereignty

During the darkest moments of my husband’s mental health struggles, I clung to the reassuring truth that God was in control, orchestrating a grand plan beyond my comprehension. The weight of those hospital visits would often leave me feeling drained and emotionally exhausted.

A Symbol of Hope

Before embarking on the long drive home, I’d pause, rest my head on the steering wheel, and pray for strength, energy, and alertness. As I navigated through heavy traffic, I’d catch glimpses of a sign that never failed to lift my spirits – a bold declaration on a blue background: JESUS IS LORD. This simple yet powerful message reminded me that my life was not a chaotic mix of random events, but rather a carefully crafted journey under God’s loving guidance.

A Loving God in Control

The realization that Jesus is Lord brought me comfort and peace, knowing that I wasn’t at the mercy of human error, cruel circumstances, or even my own mistakes. Instead, I was under the care of a God who deeply loved me and would work all things together for my good, just as Romans 8:28 promises. As Hannah Withall Smith so eloquently puts it, “For the children of God, everything comes directly from their Father’s hand, no matter who or what may have been the agents… All are destined to work for their good.”

Trusting in God’s Good Character

When life seems to make no sense, we can take comfort in knowing that God is always aware of our circumstances. Even when we can’t see His hand at work, we can trust in His good character and rest assured that He is working out a plan for our benefit. He transforms victims of circumstance into victors in Christ, as Job so boldly declares, “I know that you can do all things, no plan of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2).

A Heart Filled with Hope

As I reflected on these profound truths, my heart swelled with hope and my spirit lifted. No matter what lay ahead, I knew I would be okay, for my future was securely in God’s loving hands. In the words of Hannah Withall Smith, “I cannot Lord Thy purpose see, yet all is well since ruled by Thee.”
