Finding Peace in Turbulent Times
When faced with uncertainty and fear, it’s natural to feel troubled and anxious. But what if we could choose to respond differently? Jesus’ words to his disciples in John 14:1 offer a powerful reminder: “Let not your hearts be troubled. Trust in God.” These words may seem radical, even unrealistic, in the face of adversity. Yet, they hold a profound truth: we have the power to choose our response.
The Privilege of Excuse
We often excuse our own shortcomings, whether it’s a lack of discipline or a tendency to worry. We justify our behavior, convincing ourselves that we’re not responsible for change. But when it comes to our children, we’re quick to challenge their excuses and encourage them to take responsibility. Why do we hold ourselves to a different standard?
A Pattern for Victory
Jesus’ words “let not” imply that we have the power of choice. We’re not victims of our personalities, tendencies, or backgrounds. The path to victory may be challenging, but God provides a clear pattern: prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. As Philippians 4:6-8 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about everything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Facing Ourselves Honestly
It’s easy to make excuses, but growth requires honesty and intentionality. We must confront our own lack of discipline and confess our shortcomings to God. Only then can we trust Him to provide wisdom and strength for change.
A Prayer for Peace
Dear Lord, I confess that it’s easier to excuse myself than to grow in faith. Help me face myself honestly, confess my weaknesses, and trust you to guide me towards change. May your peace, which transcends all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.
