Embracing the Future: Leaving the Past Behind
As we step into a new year, it’s natural to reflect on the past. But sometimes, those memories can weigh us down, making it difficult to move forward. As the apostle Paul so eloquently put it, “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us” (Philippians 3:13-14, NLT).
Breaking Free from the Shackles of Yesterday
Theater critic Brooks Atkinson once said, “Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect.” Easier said than done, right? Past hurts, betrayals, and losses can linger, disturbing the peace that God promises us. So, how do we break free from the past and press on towards a brighter future?
The Power of Focus
The apostle Paul offers us three crucial words to help us move forward: focus, forget, and press on. First, we must focus on the future, deliberately choosing to concentrate on what lies ahead rather than getting bogged down in past regrets. This isn’t about denial; it’s about purposeful action.
The Art of Forgetting
Next, we must learn to forget – not in the sense of erasing memories, but rather giving less weight to past hurts. We must refuse to dwell on those things that disturb our peace and threaten the future God has planned for us.
Pressing On Towards Victory
Finally, we must press on, just like a runner nearing the finish line. We must stretch out our arms, drawing on every last ounce of strength to cross the ribbon and claim our heavenly prize. This isn’t a one-time event; it’s a daily process of examining our past hours and looking forward to the glorious future that awaits us.
A New Perspective
So, how has God helped you move beyond hurt and into forgiveness and freedom? Take a moment to reflect on His goodness and mercy. Let go of the past, press on towards the future, and claim your heavenly prize.
