The Deceptive Nature of Appearances
As a former Florida State Senator and practicing attorney, I’ve seen my fair share of deceitful tactics. But none are more insidious than those employed by the enemy of our souls.
Satan’s Disguise
The Bible warns us that Satan himself can transform into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:13). This ability to disguise evil as good is a powerful tool in his arsenal. He can make the harmful appear harmless, the false seem true, and the wicked appear righteous.
A Spiritual Illusion
Recently, I participated in a motorcycle ride to a place called Spook Hill, where vehicles seem to defy gravity and roll uphill. While it was an entertaining experience, it served as a poignant reminder of the spiritual illusions we often face. Just as our eyes can be deceived by optical illusions, so too can our souls be misled by Satan’s cunning disguises.
The Roaring Lion
Peter warns us that our adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). He lays traps and waits for us to fall, often working on schemes that take years to develop. But we need not fear, for God reminds us that “Greater is He who is in you than he that is in the world” (1 John 4:4).
Spiritual Discernment
So how can we avoid falling prey to Satan’s deceptions? We must cultivate spiritual eyes, eyes that see beyond the surface level and into the heart of the matter. This requires a commitment to worshiping God daily, immersing ourselves in His Word, and regularly participating in public worship and Bible fellowship with other believers.
A Worldly vs. Spiritual Perspective
We are constantly bombarded with messages from the educational system, media, and entertainment industry that shape our worldview. But as Christians, we must strive to see things from God’s perspective, rather than through the lens of the world. By doing so, we will be able to discern the truth from the lies, and avoid being deceived by appearances.
Acquiring Spiritual Eyes
So, how do we acquire these spiritual eyes? It begins with a daily commitment to worship, prayer, and Bible study. As we surrender our minds and hearts to God, He will begin to transform our perspective, enabling us to see things as He sees them. And when we do, we will be able to navigate the illusions and deceptions of this world with confidence and wisdom.
