Beyond Material Wealth: Finding True Riches in God

The True Measure of Wealth

As believers in Christ Jesus, let’s take a closer look at our possessions and compare them to what our fellow men have been given. While some may boast of their riches in the field, with abundant harvests yielding a golden increase, we must remember that these earthly gains pale in comparison to the God of harvests Himself. What good are bursting barns full of grain when we have the expert caretaker, who feeds us with the bread of heaven?

Wealth in the City

Others may have their riches in the city, with wealth flowing to them in constant streams, until they’re overloaded with gold. But can gold truly satisfy our deepest needs? Can it alleviate a troubled conscience or soothe a despondent heart? The answer is clear: no amount of gold can replace the comfort and guidance of our loving God.

The Fleeting Nature of Fame

Then there are those who have their riches in the applause and fame of men. But ask yourself, isn’t your God more precious to you than the fleeting praise of others? What if great crowds cheered your name, would that prepare you to face the unknown, or bring comfort in times of sorrow? No, there are depths of grief in life that wealth and fame cannot touch.

The True Source of Riches

But when you have God as your portion, you have more than all else combined. In Him, every need is met, whether in life or in death. With God, you are rich indeed, for He will supply your needs, comfort your heart, assuage your grief, guide your steps, and be with you in the darkest of valleys. And ultimately, He will take you home to enjoy Him as your portion forever.

A Lesson from Esau and Jacob

As we reflect on our own lives, let’s remember the words of Esau, “I have enough,” and the response of Jacob, “I have all things.” While the world may boast of its riches, we, as children of God, can confidently say that we have everything we need in Him. So, let’s not compare ourselves to others, but instead, let’s focus on the true riches we have in our loving God.

Reflecting on Our Own Lives

Have you been comparing yourself to others lately? How has this kind of comparison ultimately left you feeling unfulfilled? Take a moment to reflect on the true source of your wealth and comfort – the God who loves you and provides for all your needs.
