Breaking Free from Labels
We’ve all been guilty of it at some point – slapping a label on someone and thinking we’ve got them figured out. “He’s an addict,” we say, or “She’s a divorcee.” But what do these labels really do? They give us an excuse to write people off, to distance ourselves from their struggles and imperfections.
The Power of Inclusion
Jesus, on the other hand, was all about embracing the outcasts. He touched lepers, loved foreigners, and spent time with those society deemed unsavory. The Bible says he “moved into the neighborhood” (John 1:14), demonstrating his desire to be among the people, not above them. Racism, demons, and social status couldn’t keep him from reaching out to those in need.
Choosing Compassion
As we encounter people who have been discarded – sometimes even by the church – we have a choice to make. Will we neglect them or rescue them? Will we label them or love them? Jesus’ example is clear: he chose to love, to set aside his divine privileges and take on the status of a slave (Philippians 2:7).
Following Jesus’ Lead
We have the opportunity to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, to break free from the confines of labeling and pigeonholing. Let’s choose to see people, not labels. Let’s choose to love, not judge. When we do, we’ll find ourselves surrounded by the very people Jesus came to save – the outcasts, the marginalized, and the forgotten.
