Beyond Earthly Accolades: Chasing Eternal Glory

The Fleeting Nature of Human Achievements

As I rummaged through the dusty recesses of my attic, I stumbled upon a treasure trove of memories. Five large boxes, once proudly displayed in my capitol office, now lay tarnished and forgotten. Each box was filled with plaques, a testament to my accomplishments as a legislator. But as I held them in my hands, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me.

The Illusion of Permanence

It’s as if there’s an unwritten law that dictates the amount of items we store away will inevitably grow to fill the available space. My wife’s periodic attempts to declutter our home always seem to be undone by the passage of time. And so, I found myself surrounded by these relics of my past, each one telling a story of triumph and recognition.

A Crown That Will Not Last

As I sorted through the plaques, I was struck by the fleeting nature of human achievements. Awards that once brought me pride and political clout now seemed insignificant. The people and organizations that presented them to me had long forgotten my existence, and the legislation I fought so hard to pass had been undone by subsequent lawmakers. It was a sobering realization, one that forced me to confront the true value of these earthly accolades.

A Crown That Will Last Forever

The words of Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:24-26 echoed in my mind: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.” It was a poignant reminder that our efforts should be focused on securing a crown of glory that will endure for eternity, rather than chasing after fleeting human recognition.

What Are You Competing For?

As I reflected on my own life, I couldn’t help but ask myself: what am I competing for? Is it the approval of men, or the glory of God? What is the most important thing I am striving for, and how does it align with my eternal purpose? It’s a question we must all ask ourselves, lest we devote our lives to pursuits that will ultimately prove meaningless.

Beyond This World

In the end, it’s not about the plaques or the accolades. It’s about the legacy we leave behind, and the impact we have on the world around us. As Christians, we are called to run the race of faith with perseverance, our eyes fixed on the prize of eternal life. Let us not be distracted by the fleeting rewards of this world, but instead, strive for the crown that will last forever.
