The Power of Forgiveness in Prayer
When we stand before God in prayer, there’s a crucial step we must take to ensure our prayers are heard: forgiveness. As Jesus taught in Mark 11:25, “When you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” This verse reveals a two-fold path to certain forgiveness.
The First Step: Forgiving Others
First, we must release any resentment or bitterness we hold against others. Unforgiveness can create a barrier between us and God, hindering our prayers. When we choose to forgive, we open the door for God’s forgiveness to flow into our lives.
The Second Step: Trusting God’s Word
The second step is to believe God’s promise of forgiveness without hesitation. Scripture assures us that when we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We must trust in His goodness and mercy, knowing that He desires to forgive us.
The Posture of Humility
While Scripture sometimes mentions standing as a posture for prayer, God looks beyond our physical position to the condition of our heart. However, kneeling can be a powerful expression of humility and reverence before God. Ultimately, the key is to approach God with a heart that is humble and surrendered.
Prioritizing Forgiveness
The most important thing is to forgive before we pray. This is not an optional step; it’s essential for experiencing God’s forgiveness and blessings. As we examine our hearts throughout the day, let us make sure we’ve forgiven those who need forgiveness, so that we can pray with confidence and freedom.
Today’s Action Point
Take a moment to reflect on your relationships and ensure you’ve forgiven anyone who needs forgiveness. Then, approach God in prayer with a heart that is humble, surrendered, and free from unforgiveness.
