The Erosion of Faith: How Christianity Is Losing Its Roots

The Shift in Faith: A Move Away from Scriptural Authority

A Disturbing Trend

While the majority of people still identify as Christians, a concerning shift is taking place in the church. Many are abandoning a convictional faith, deeply rooted in biblical truth, for a more cultural, feel-good religion. This movement is characterized by a shallow, utilitarian view of God, devoid of scriptural authority.

The Rise of Moral Therapeutic Deism

Ed Stetzer aptly notes, “The Church isn’t dying off, it’s just being more clearly defined.” The new “in” faith can be summed up as moral therapeutic deism, where God is seen as a benevolent creator who rewards good behavior and helps believers feel happy and content. This naive view of God has given up on scriptural truth and offers nothing to a fallen world.

The Creed of Moral Therapeutic Deism

This belief system is built on five core principles:

  1. A god exists: A creator who watches over human life on earth.
  2. Be good, nice, and fair: God wants people to be kind to one another, as taught in the Bible and other religions.
  3. Happiness is the goal: The central aim of life is to be happy and feel good about oneself.
  4. God is only needed in crisis: God is not necessary in daily life, except when problems arise.
  5. Good people go to heaven: A simplistic view of salvation, where good deeds earn a ticket to heaven.

The Consequences of a Watered-Down Faith

When asked about their beliefs, many respond with a shrug and “whatever.” This lack of theological understanding is a substitute for serious, responsible thinking. The essential question of Christian faith, posed by Jesus in Mark 8:19, “Who do you say I am?” becomes irrelevant. If Jesus is not at the center of our beliefs, our faith is meaningless.

A Call to Reflection

As more churches and their members move away from scriptural authority, their faith diminishes into a meaningless blend with postmodern culture. Where are you in your relationship with Jesus today? Take a moment to reflect on the authenticity of your faith.
