The Power of the Cross: A Symbol of Hope and Redemption
In today’s world, it’s hard to escape the presence of the cross. From chapels to graveyards, from jewelry to art, the cross is an ubiquitous symbol of Christianity. But have you ever stopped to think about the irony of this symbol? A tool of torture, used to execute criminals, has become the embodiment of a movement of hope and love.
The symbols of other faiths are often more uplifting: the six-pointed star of David, the crescent moon of Islam, the lotus blossom of Buddhism. Yet, Christianity has chosen the cross, an instrument of execution, as its universal symbol. Would we wear a tiny electric chair around our neck or display a gold-plated hangman’s noose on our wall? Probably not. So, why the cross?
The Answer Lies in the Cross Itself
The design of the cross is deceptively simple: one beam horizontal, the other vertical. The horizontal beam represents the width of God’s love, reaching out to humanity. The vertical beam symbolizes the height of God’s holiness, reaching up to the heavens. The cross is the intersection of these two beams, where God’s love and holiness meet.
The Cross: A Symbol of Forgiveness and Redemption
At the cross, God forgave humanity without compromising his standards. He put our sin on his Son, Jesus Christ, and punished it there. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 (MSG) says, “God put on him the wrong who never did anything wrong, so we could be put right with God.” This act of sacrifice and forgiveness is the essence of Christianity.
A Personal Encounter with the Cross
Have you reached a point in your spiritual journey where you realize that Jesus Christ died for your sins? Do you yearn to be free from the weight of sin and guilt? Do you want Jesus Christ to direct your life from now on?
If your answer is yes, then pray this prayer and experience the forgiveness and redemption of the cross:
Lord Jesus, I want to know you personally. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins. I open the door of my life and receive You as Savior and Lord. Thank You for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Take control of the throne of my life. Make me the kind of person You want me to be. Amen.
