Surrendering Treasures for Eternal Life

The Heart’s True Treasure

When it comes to following Jesus, there’s a crucial question we must ask ourselves: what am I willing to surrender for eternal life?

A Young Man’s Dilemma

In Matthew 19:16-22, a young man approaches Jesus, seeking the key to eternal life. Jesus responds by outlining the commandments, and the young man confidently claims to have kept them all. But Jesus senses that there’s more to the story. He sees that the young man’s possessions have become an obstacle to fully following Him. So, Jesus presents him with a radical challenge: sell your possessions, give to the poor, and come follow me.

The Crucible of Choice

I can relate to the young man’s predicament. As a child, I immigrated to Canada with my family, and we had to downsize our belongings to fit a small shipping container. It was a painful process, surrendering treasured items and confronting the limitations of our new life. But in that experience, I learned the value of letting go.

A Heart Condition

Jesus isn’t interested in negotiating with our hearts. He knows that our treasures reveal our true priorities. When we cling to material possessions, we’re essentially saying that they’re more valuable than our relationship with Him. The young man in Matthew 19 ultimately chooses to hold onto his possessions, and in doing so, he rejects Jesus’ offer.

The Daily Choice

As followers of Christ, we face a similar choice every day. What are we willing to surrender for the sake of deeper intimacy with God? Are we holding onto things that hinder our relationship with Him? The answer lies in our heart condition. Will we choose to reevaluate our treasures, submitting them to God’s will and word?

A Prayer for Surrender

Lord, create in me a transparent heart, willing to reexamine my priorities and surrender anything that stands in the way of relational intimacy with You. Empower me with the resolve to choose wisely, daily submitting my heart to Your word and will. Amen.
