The Pursuit of True Wisdom
In a world where knowledge is abundant, wisdom is often in short supply. The phrase “donkeys laden with books” from rabbinical literature aptly describes individuals who possess vast amounts of knowledge yet remain foolish. The adage “knowledge is power” rings true, but it’s crucial to consider how that power is wielded – for good or evil.
The Misuse of Knowledge
We’re living in an era where information is more accessible than ever, yet many would argue that wisdom has not kept pace. We’re moving at an unprecedented rate, but are we heading in the right direction? As the saying goes, “you can’t pick grapes from a bramble bush,” and similarly, a life of virtue cannot be cultivated from reckless behavior. Unfortunately, many individuals in our society are “educated beyond their intelligence,” lacking the genuine wisdom that only comes from above.
The Neglect of Wisdom
Our modern education system seems to prioritize the accumulation of knowledge over the pursuit of wisdom. This imbalance can lead to the misuse of knowledge, causing harm to ourselves and others. William Lyon Phelps, a renowned English professor at Yale University, once wisely stated, “If I could choose between a knowledge of the Bible and a college education, I would readily choose the knowledge of the Bible.”
Seeking Divine Wisdom
So, where can we find true wisdom? The answer lies in seeking guidance from the ultimate source – God, His Word, and the indwelling Holy Spirit. As James 3:17 reminds us, “the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure and full of quiet gentleness.” By embracing this divine wisdom, we can live a life that is “peace-loving and courteous,” filled with mercy, good deeds, and sincerity.
A Supernatural Life
To experience a life that transcends the ordinary, we must look to God for wisdom. As James 1:5 promises, “if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.” By seeking wisdom from above, we can navigate life’s challenges with confidence, making a positive impact on the world around us.
