Rediscovering the Heart of the Gospel
In an era where politics, family values, and culture wars dominate the conversation, the true essence of the Gospel message has become clouded. It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that it’s all about Jesus. When asked to define what it means to be a Christian, many people struggle to mention Jesus or the cross. Yet, our message, from start to finish, is centered around Jesus – who he was, what he said, and what he did.
A Movement Revolved Around Jesus
The last recognized revival in the United States, which took place in the 1970s, was aptly dubbed the ‘Jesus movement’. This movement, primarily among baby boom youth, focused entirely on Jesus. It’s no surprise that Jesus, with his long hair, sandals, and anti-establishment views, resonated with a generation of idealistic young people who rejected traditional religion and the institutional church. Jesus was the central figure, and this emphasis transcended politics and religion.
The Power of a Personal Message
What’s now referred to as Christian music was originally called Jesus music, and Christians were affectionately known as Jesus freaks. While we don’t need to revisit the fashion of the past, we can learn from the simplicity and focus of that era. Our message is about a person, and our mission is to share that person with the world. God created us to belong to him; we strayed away; Jesus is the path back. This message is personal, non-threatening, and centered around a meaningful relationship with God, made possible through a meaningful relationship with Jesus.
Introducing People to Jesus
We’ve added many layers to this message over time, but it’s essential to ask ourselves if these additions are helping us fulfill our purpose. If they promote love and kindness towards our neighbors, then they’re likely beneficial. However, if they create division and hostility, they’re probably not. When our focus is on Jesus, we’re undoubtedly on the right track. Jesus came to save us, unite us, and teach us to love one another.
What Sets Jesus Apart?
So, what makes Jesus and his message distinct from every other religious teacher? It’s a question worth pondering. In a world where religions and ideologies abound, Jesus stands out as a beacon of hope, love, and redemption. By refocusing on the heart of the Gospel, we can rediscover the transformative power of Jesus’ message and share it with a world that desperately needs it.
