Embracing a Fresh Start: Rediscovering the Foundations of Faith
As we step into a new year, we’re presented with a unique opportunity to recalibrate our focus and refocus on the essentials of our Christian faith. While we can’t erase the mistakes of our past, we can learn from them and lay them at the foot of the cross, allowing God to work redemption and renewal in our lives.
Getting Back to Basics
Legendary coach Vince Lombardi once famously reminded his struggling team of the fundamentals by holding up a football and saying, “Gentlemen, this is a football.” Similarly, we need to revisit the core principles of our faith to ensure we’re building on a solid foundation.
Rediscovering Our Identity in Christ
In this new year, let’s reaffirm our identity in Christ by embracing the following truths:
• I am a beloved child of God (John 1:12)
• I am a trusted friend of Christ (John 15:15)
• I am united with the Lord and empowered by His Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17)
Unpacking Our Purpose and Privileges
As we rediscover our identity, we’ll uncover the incredible privileges and purposes that come with being a child of God:
• I am a personal witness of Christ’s love and redemption (Acts 1:8)
• I am the salt and light of the earth, called to make a difference (Matthew 5:13-14)
• I am a member of the body of Christ, connected and empowered by His Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:27)
Embracing Our Freedom and Assurance
In Christ, we’re free from condemnation and empowered to live a life of purpose and significance:
• I am free forever from the grip of sin and shame (Romans 8:1-2)
• I am a citizen of Heaven, with a eternal perspective (Philippians 3:20)
• I am assured that all things work together for good (Romans 8:28)
Living Out Our Faith with Confidence
As we stand on the foundation of our identity and purpose, we can approach life with confidence and freedom:
• I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13)
• I am God’s temple, a dwelling place for His Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16)
• I am complete in Christ, lacking nothing (Colossians 2:10)
A New Year, A Fresh Start
As we embark on this new year, let’s choose to anchor ourselves in the unshakeable truths of our faith. May we rediscover the joy and freedom that comes from knowing who we are and whose we are in Christ. Amen.
