Embracing the Joy of Imitation
As I lay on the floor, absorbed in the newspaper, my grandson snuggled up beside me, radiating an infectious grin. Without a word, he mirrored my actions, carefully turning the pages and tracing my gestures. It was a heartwarming moment, filled with pure joy and unbridled enthusiasm. Though he couldn’t read and wasn’t interested in the ads, he was captivated by the simple act of mimicking me.
This tender scene brought to mind the powerful words of Ephesians 5:1: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children…” But what does it truly mean to imitate God?
Getting to Know God Intimately
Before we can imitate God, we must first take the time to “lie next to Him” and observe His character. As Daniel 11:32 reminds us, “the people who know their God display strength and take action.” This “knowing” goes beyond mere observation; it’s an intimate, personal connection, much like the bond between two loving partners.
We can deepen our relationship with God through two primary means:
The Power of Scripture
First, we have God’s Word, which offers us a glimpse into His nature and character. While studying Scripture is essential, it’s only the beginning. We must also take action, applying the principles we’ve learned to our daily lives.
Putting Faith into Action
True knowledge of God involves more than just intellectual understanding; it requires active participation. As we embody God’s principles, we begin to grasp the why behind His commands. My grandson may not have comprehended my actions, but he was eager to imitate me. Similarly, we may not always understand God’s ways, but as we obey and put our faith into practice, we’ll come to appreciate His faithfulness, wisdom, and love.
A Call to Imitation
Today, take a moment to bask in God’s presence, immersed in His Word. Then, reflect on how you can joyfully imitate Him in your daily life. As the saying goes, “Imitation is the best compliment.” By doing so, you’ll undoubtedly bring a smile to God’s face.
