Finding Peace in Turmoil: Trusting God’s Eternal Promises

Finding Peace in the Midst of Turmoil

In the darkest of times, it’s easy to lose sight of God’s presence. Yet, it’s precisely in those moments that we need to hold onto His promise: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

The Power of Faith

Horatio G. Stafford, the author of the iconic hymn “It Is Well,” knew this all too well. After losing his four daughters in a shipwreck, he penned those famous lyrics: “When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll; whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.” How did he find the strength to write such words of faith amidst unimaginable tragedy?

The Key to Inner Peace

The answer lies in Psalm 46:10. God’s command to “be still” is not a call to ignore our emotions or pretend that everything is okay when it’s not. Rather, it’s an invitation to pause, take a deep breath, and remember that God is always in control. He didn’t say “Be still, and feel that I am God.” He said “Be still, and know that I am God.” This knowledge is what gives us the confidence to trust Him, even when our feelings scream otherwise.

Trusting in God’s Promises

Feelings are fleeting, but God’s promises are eternal. When we focus on what we know to be true about God, rather than our temporary emotions, we can praise Him even in the darkest of times. As Paul wrote from his prison cell, “I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return” (1 Timothy 1:12, NLT).

Renewing Your Commitment to God

If you’re feeling lost or disconnected from God, it’s never too late to renew your commitment to Him. Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you, and ask God to direct your life according to His perfect plan. You can pray this prayer:

“Dear Father, I need You. I acknowledge that I have sinned against You by directing my own life. I thank You that You have forgiven my sins through Christ’s death on the cross for me. I now invite Christ to again take His place on the throne of my life. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as You commanded me to be filled, and as You promised in Your Word that You would do if I asked in faith. I pray this in the name of Jesus. As an expression of my faith, I thank You for directing my life and for filling me with the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
