Finding Serenity in a Frantic World
In today’s fast-paced society, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of activity and forget to take a step back, breathe, and recharge. Over 60 years ago, a well-known soft drink company popularized the phrase “the pause that refreshes,” reminding us of the importance of slowing down and savoring the moment.
A Moment of Reflection
Author Charles O’Brien beautifully captures the essence of this concept in his description of a character’s religious life: “During the day, Mrs. G. takes short pauses, becomes very still, as if asking God for direction, or sharing a problem with Him.” This simple yet profound act of pausing to connect with a higher power can be truly transformative.
The Need for Refreshment
In our modern world, where the pace of life is faster than ever, we need these pauses more than ever. It’s essential to take time to center our minds on the source of true life and guidance. One dictionary defines “refresh” as “to restore to a certain condition by providing a fresh supply of something.” This concept is especially relevant when we consider the story of King David, who strayed from God’s path and ultimately pleaded for forgiveness and restoration.
A Lesson from King David
David’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking refreshment and guidance from God. If only he had paused to reflect and seek direction before making choices that led to sin, his journey might have been very different. This poignant example encourages us to prioritize our relationship with God, rather than relying solely on activity and busyness.
A Prayer for Refreshment
Dear Father, forgive us for neglecting your call to refreshment. Help us to recognize the value of pausing to connect with you, and to seek your guidance and wisdom in all aspects of our lives. In Jesus’ name, amen.
