The Imperfection of Humanity: A Call to Mercy
When we place others on pedestals, we set ourselves up for disappointment. None of us are perfect, yet we expect those we respect to live up to unattainable standards. Even Jesus, the only perfect human, is held as the benchmark for human behavior.
The Danger of Unrealistic Expectations
We become disillusioned when friends, teachers, leaders, children, or spouses fail to meet our expectations. This disillusionment can lead to judgment, hurt, bitterness, cynicism, and even meanness. Why? Because we expect them to be perfect, just like Jesus.
Relying on God’s Grace
Instead of relying on God’s grace to transform others, we often place our trust in their ability to change. This is a recipe for disappointment. Oswald Chambers wisely wrote, “Our Lord trusted no man; yet He was never suspicious, never bitter, never in despair about any man, because He put God first in trust.”
The Power of the Holy Spirit
We have the Holy Spirit working within us, guiding us to desire and empower us to do what pleases God (Philippians 2:13). God takes pleasure in our mercy and graciousness towards others, just as He extends it to us.
A Call to Forgiveness
Have you been disappointed in others lately? Ask Jesus to enable you to have His attitude towards them. Forgive and love! When we experience disappointment, may we remember that God is not finished with them yet – His grace is sufficient to change them.
A Prayer for Mercy
Lord Jesus, next time we are disappointed in someone’s action or attitude, please remind us that God is not finished with them yet – that His grace is sufficient to change them. Thank you for empowering us to keep loving them. Amen.
