Unlocking the Power of God’s Names
A Strong Tower of Refuge
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower. The righteous run into it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10) This ancient wisdom reveals the significance of God’s names, which hold the key to understanding His character, personality, and purposes.
Names that Reveal Character
In biblical times, personal names were more than just labels; they conveyed essential information about a person’s identity and nature. When individuals underwent a transformation, their names changed to reflect their new character, such as Jacob becoming Israel, Simon becoming Peter, and Saul becoming Paul. Similarly, God’s many names showcase facets of His boundless glory.
Making God’s Name Known
God took great care to introduce Himself to Israel, and Jesus emphasized the importance of making the Father’s name known, that we might love Him more and experience His abiding presence (John 17:26). As we discover God’s names, we uncover the treasures hidden within Him, bringing joy to His heart.
A Treasure Trove of Names
The Bible contains a wealth of God’s names and attributes. In Revelation, we find 37 names and 120 ways God is described. The Psalms reveal 61 names or titles and 300 attributes, while Isaiah contains 64 names and titles and 150 attributes. Each name offers a unique insight into God’s nature, inviting us to know Him more intimately.
Calling Upon God
What we call God reflects our relationship with Him. Do we address Him as Lord, Abba-Father, or King? For every situation, there is a name of God that meets our need. Instead of focusing on our problems, let us fix our attention on the overcoming God of the universe.
Worshiping God in His Many Names
As we pray, let us worship God in ways that are meaningful to us, guided by His Spirit. Make it your ambition to glorify God and enjoy Him in all His fullness. The King of kings desires a personal relationship with you, inviting you to walk with the Lord of hosts, drink from the Living Water, and feast on the Bread of Life.
