Cultivating Gentleness: The Transformative Power of Kindness

The Power of Gentleness

In the midst of chaos, it’s easy to lose sight of the importance of gentleness. As a father of four rambunctious boys, I’ve found myself succumbing to anger and frustration, trying to discipline them into submission. But as I reflect on my own life, I realize that harsh words and actions have never brought about lasting change. Instead, it’s the gentle reminders and patient guidance that have shaped me into the person I am today.

A Lesson from Scripture

The Bible reminds us of the transformative power of gentleness in 2 Samuel 22:36, where David praises God, saying, “You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great.” This verse speaks to the heart of God’s nature – a God who relates to us with kindness, patience, and understanding.

The Impact of Gentleness

When I asked my wife what she thought was the scarcest spiritual fruit in my life, she gently replied, “Gentleness.” And she’s right. I’ve come to realize that gentleness is not just a nice-to-have, but a essential quality for effective discipleship. By investing in those we love with patience, kindness, and affirmation, we create an environment where they can thrive and grow.

Walking Beside, Not Ahead

As we come alongside others, we must resist the temptation to rush the process, wanting them to “arrive” now. Instead, we should gently encourage them to take the next step, meeting them where they are. By doing so, we’ll bear much fruit in the good work of discipleship.

A Prayer for Gentleness

Dear Jesus, I need Your patience. Teach me how to lead and instruct with gentleness and kindness. Deal with my impatience and anger, and create in me Your heart for the people in my life. Amen.
