The Dangers of Imitation Faith
As believers, we often strive to follow in the footsteps of Christ, but what does it truly mean to be a disciple of Jesus? We may ask ourselves, “What would Jesus do?” and try to emulate His actions, but is that enough to save us?
A Lesson from a Fake Watch
I once owned a beautiful watch, one that looked like a top brand, but was actually a cheap imitation purchased at a flea market. It may have looked real on the outside, but inside, it was worthless. Similarly, many Christians may appear to be following Christ, but are they truly surrendered to Him?
The Example of Christ
In 1 Peter 2:21, we’re told that Christ suffered for us, leaving us an example to follow. However, this verse is often misinterpreted to mean that we can be saved by imitating Jesus. But that’s not what Peter is saying. He’s highlighting Christ’s sinless nature, even in the face of gross mistreatment, and His complete trust in the Father.
The Problem with Imitation
The biggest issue with trying to be saved by following Christ’s example is that we’ve already failed. We’re imperfect, and no matter how hard we try, we can’t achieve perfection. Jesus is not only our example, but also our substitute, who took the consequences of our sin upon Himself.
The Power of Surrender
Trying to “be like Jesus” in our own strength is doomed to frustration. We need the power of the Holy Spirit to live the Christian life, which comes not from imitation, but from total surrender. We must transfer our trust from our own efforts to the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, accepting the Scriptures as the standard for what we believe and do.
The Real Thing
So, are you an “imitation Christian” or the real deal? Have you surrendered your life to Christ, or are you trying to follow Him in your own strength? Remember, it’s not about imitating Jesus, but about surrendering to Him and trusting in His power to transform your life.
