Unlocking the Book of Acts: Empowering Mission and Evangelism

Unpacking the Power of Acts

As we dive into the book of Acts, we’re met with the thrilling story of the early Christian church. The enthroned Lord Jesus is at work, empowering his apostles through the Holy Spirit to spread the message of salvation to the ends of the earth. In this podcast, we’re joined by Pastor Nate Shurden, who shares his insights on what to consider when teaching through the book of Acts.

A Pastor’s Perspective

Nate Shurden, pastor of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church in Franklin, Tennessee, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Currently working on his Doctor of Ministry degree, Nate has a deep understanding of the Bible and its application to our lives. As Nancy Guthrie’s pastor, he’s had the opportunity to teach through various books of the Bible, including the book of Acts.

Why Teach Through Acts?

So, what prompted Nate to lead a study on the book of Acts? He explains that after teaching through the book of Joshua, he saw parallels between the two books. Both narratives demonstrate God’s faithfulness and the fulfillment of his promises. The book of Acts, in particular, showcases the risen and ascended Lord pouring out the Holy Spirit, conquering the land, and spreading the gospel to the uttermost parts of the world.

Equipping for Mission

Nate saw an opportunity to equip the men in his congregation to be on mission for Christ. By studying the book of Acts, they could learn from examples of evangelism, such as Stephen, Peter, and Paul, and be encouraged to share the gospel in their own contexts. This study would not only enrich their understanding of Scripture but also empower them to testify to the truth of the gospel in the public square.

Lessons for Leaders

For those considering or preparing to lead a study through the book of Acts, Nate’s insights offer valuable lessons. By understanding the historical narrative and the connections between Old and New Testaments, leaders can better equip their congregations to be on mission for Christ. The book of Acts provides a rich tapestry of examples and encouragement for believers to spread the gospel and testify to its truth.
