Unfathomable Love: The Depth of Christ’s Sacrifice

The Unfathomable Love of Christ

As I reflect on the powerful lyrics of Michael Card’s song “Why?”, I am overcome with emotion. The troubadour’s poignant words paint a vivid picture of Christ’s unwavering love, which held Him to the cross, even when no nails were needed.

A Love Beyond Measure

Jesus’ demonstration of love surpasses human comprehension. John 15:13 reminds us that “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” Yet, Christ’s love goes far beyond this measure. He chose to endure the excruciating pain of the cross, even when His Father turned away, taking on our sins.

The Ultimate Act of Love

In that moment, Jesus could have saved Himself, but He chose to hang on the cross, pouring out His love for us. This selfless act is a profound reminder of the depth and breadth of His love. As we bow before Him, we can envision Him there, compelled by love, taking punishment on our behalf.

A Love That Strengthens and Corrects

When we doubt ourselves, feeling inadequate to share the truth about Christ, His love hangs before us, strengthening and correcting us. In those moments of uncertainty, His arms remain stretched out, beckoning us to draw near.

Responding to Unfathomable Love

As we struggle to grasp the magnitude of Christ’s love, we can only respond with gratitude and humility. Dear Lord, thank You for choosing to hang on the cross for my sake. Teach me how to deepen my love for You and others in response. Amen.
