The Unbridled Devotion of a Mother’s Love: A Reflection of God’s Intimacy

Unbridled Devotion: A Mother’s Love

As I stood still at the traffic lights, my gaze fixed on the red lights ahead, a sudden movement in the car in front of me caught my attention. A woman leaned across, her face inches from her passenger’s, and I thought, “Ah, young love!” But, as I watched, I realized the object of her affection was not a romantic partner, but her toddler son, seated in a booster seat.

She tenderly inspected his face, cleaned it, and fussed over him, preparing him for his drop-off at the nearby nursery. In that moment, I was struck by the depth of her love. And then, a phrase echoed in my mind: “coming-towards-as-if-to-kiss.” It was as if God had ambushed me once again.

The Essence of Worship

The Greek word “proskyneo” – meaning to worship – conveys a sense of trust, love, deference, respect, and intimacy. It’s an uninhibited expression, like Mary Magdalene’s passionate display of devotion. As our Creator, God yearns for a close, personal relationship with us, just as this mother desired to be near her child.

A Call to Intimacy

The question is, will we allow God to draw near, to clean us up, make us presentable, encourage us, and send us out into the world? Are we prepared to open ourselves to Him in reverence, to let Him get up close and personal?

A Prayer of Surrender

Lord, You are awe-inspiring, holy, and majestic, yet You crave our worship, obedience, and love. We come before You with bended knee and humble hearts, saying, “Our Lord, come! Visit us once more today, in Jesus’ name, amen.”
