The Windows of Our Soul
A New Perspective
As I reflect on my childhood, I’m reminded of the sash windows in our home. My mother would twist and turn to clean the exterior, a frequent necessity in her book. But it wasn’t until I lived in Germany that I discovered a game-changing window design. With unique hinges at the bottom, sides, and top, these windows could swing up, down, or out, making housecleaning a breeze, even on rainy days.
A Lesson in Visibility
Frank Laubach’s words resonated deeply with me: “Windows open outward as well as upward. Windows especially open downward where people need most.” It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives, looking upward toward our goals and aspirations. But what about those around us? Do we truly see them? Or do we glance away from the homeless person on the street corner, the frazzled young mom in church, or the woman dressed in black?
The Example of Jesus
As I read through the gospels, I’m struck by the frequency of the phrase “Jesus saw.” He didn’t just look upward toward His Father; He also looked downward, seeing the needs of those around Him. He didn’t avert His eyes from the marginalized or the struggling. Instead, He saw them, and His compassion was stirred.
Cleaning the Windows of Our Soul
The question remains: Are the windows of our soul clean and wide open to see as Jesus did? As we strive to live and love like Him, we must ask ourselves: Are we willing to open our hearts and minds to those around us? Are we willing to see the world from their perspective?
Spreading the News
As we learn to see as Jesus did, the news of His wonder-working power will spread far and wide. It’s time to open our windows, to let the fresh air of compassion and love blow through our lives, and to share that love with a world in need.
