Overcoming Fear with Faith: Finding Comfort in God’s Presence

Facing Fears with Confidence

As I watched my two-and-a-half-year-old grandson, Domonic, “help” his Papa with spring cleanup in the backyard, I noticed him suddenly burst into tears. When I asked what was wrong, he whispered, “Me scared.” It turned out that he had seen wild deer roaming in that part of the yard before and was afraid they might appear again. I scooped him up in my arms, reassured him that Papa could chase the deer away, and calmed his fears.

Reflecting on Our Own Fears

As I comforted Domonic, I realized that I’m not so different from him. I, too, have fears that can leave me feeling anxious, worried, or paralyzed. Just as I reassured Domonic of my protection, I need to experience God’s embracing presence in my own moments of fear. I recall a particularly dark night when I felt overwhelmed, crying out to God for help. His response was not verbal, but it was clear as day: “Who created these stars and put them in their place? Do you think I’m big enough to handle your problems and fears?” In that instant, my fears seemed to shrink, and I was reminded of God’s power and presence.

Finding Comfort in Uncertain Times

In a world filled with uncertainties, Psalm 147 offers us comfort and reassurance. God is big enough to comfort His children in the midst of all possible fears! The psalmist writes:

“Praise the LORD! For it is good to sing praises to our God;
For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
The LORD builds up Jerusalem;
He gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
And binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars;
He gives names to all of them.
Great is our Lord and abundant in strength;
His understanding is infinite.
The LORD supports the afflicted;
He brings down the wicked to the ground.” (Psalm 147:1-6, NIV)

Moving Forward with Confidence

So, how do we respond in the face of fear? What steps can we take to face the future positively and without fear? Perhaps it’s time to reflect on our own fears and worries, and to seek God’s embracing presence in those moments. As we do, we can find comfort in knowing that God is big enough to handle our problems and fears, and that He will support us every step of the way.
