Living Your Life with Purpose: A Quiet yet Powerful Influence
As followers of Christ, we often wonder how we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of those around us, especially our loved ones who may not share our faith. The apostle Paul offers valuable guidance in 1 Corinthians 7, where he addresses believers married to unbelievers. While his advice is specific to this context, it holds a broader significance for all believers interacting with non-believers in their daily lives.
Staying in Relationships with Unbelievers
Paul’s general rule is clear: if the unbelieving spouse chooses to stay in the marriage, it’s good for the believer to stay as well. This decision is rooted in two key reasons. Firstly, the believing parent can provide a godly influence on their children. Secondly, the unbelieving spouse may be converted “because of” the believer’s presence in their life.
What Does “Because of You” Mean?
It’s essential to understand what Paul means by “because of you.” It’s not about being on a personal crusade to save our spouse or others. Nor is it about turning our homes into religious institutions that coerce others into accepting Christianity. Rather, it’s about living our lives with a sense of purpose that stems from our faith in God. It’s about being who we are, living as we do, and allowing our faith to permeate every aspect of our lives.
A Subtle yet Powerful Influence
When we live our lives according to God’s purposes, we create an environment where others may become curious about our faith. This is not about coercion, but rather a steady, subtle influence over time. It’s about being a believer who goes about the process of believing, while others observe our lives with interest.
Thought for the Day
Don’t underestimate the power of living your life with purpose. God can work wonders “because of you,” even when you’re not actively trying to convert others. By simply being yourself and living out your faith, you may inspire change in those around you.
