When Foundations Are Rocked
Have you ever experienced a sudden, seismic shift in your life that left you reeling? A moment that challenged everything you thought you knew about yourself and your place in the world? For me, that moment came in 2009 when my mother passed away after a brave battle with cancer.
A Tsunami of Emotions
In the aftermath of her passing, I was consumed by a maelstrom of emotions – regret, shame, confusion, anger, and depression. It was as if the very foundations of my life were crumbling beneath me. Every carefully constructed pillar of my existence began to topple, leaving me lost and disoriented.
A Turning Point
It was during this dark period that I stumbled upon the book of Job, a biblical account of a man who faced unimaginable suffering and loss. As I delved into Job’s story, I found myself drawn to his struggles, his questions, and his doubts. But it wasn’t until I reached Chapter 38 that I was stopped in my tracks.
A Divine Perspective
In this chapter, God responds to Job’s queries with a series of piercing questions that cut to the heart of human arrogance. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.” (Job 38:4-7, NLT) The weight of these words crushed me. I was forced to confront the reality of my own insignificance in the grand tapestry of creation.
A Choice to Make
In that moment, I was faced with a choice: to continue questioning God’s sovereignty or to surrender to His majesty. I realized that I had a decision to make in every moment of my life – to challenge God or to follow Him, the Creator of all things.
A Cornerstone of Faith
Today, I still don’t have all the answers, but I have chosen to place my trust in the One who knows what He is doing. I have found peace and rest in my soul because I know that God is the cornerstone of my life.
A Prayer for Guidance
When I am angry, hurting, and questioning, I pray: “God in Heaven, remind me that You are the one who set the Earth on its foundation. Remind me that You know my name, and that You came down to Earth to meet me. Reveal Your love to me.”
A Question for You
Are you struggling with pain and confusion in your life? I encourage you to explore the book of Job and his response to God. You may find, as I did, that it provides a new perspective on your circumstances and a deeper understanding of God’s love and sovereignty.
