Finding Hope in the Waiting: Living Fully in Uncertainty

Embracing the Tension of Waiting

As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the apostle Paul’s words: “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14) These verses have become a beacon of hope, guiding me through the uncertainty of waiting.

The Paradox of Waiting

For the past two years, I’ve been waiting for a surgery date, feeling like my life was on hold. A counseling session early on helped me realize that waiting doesn’t have to mean being passive. I learned to adopt a mindset that my life is whatever is presently happening, rather than putting it on hold until circumstances change. This perspective shift has been liberating.

Forgiving and Embracing Our Circumstances

One author’s idea has stuck with me: we must forgive the very circumstances of our lives. I’d add that we must also embrace them. This is my life – today, right now, in these moments. Whatever they are, or aren’t. It’s easy to get caught up in waiting for something to change or get better before we start living. But what if we started living now, in the midst of uncertainty?

The Tension of Eternity

Scripture reminds us to fix our eyes on the prize, to keep the finish line in view, and to remember the goal of eternity. This creates a tension within me – how do I balance living my life here on earth while waiting to live with God eternally? It seems contradictory, but it’s actually the looking forward to eternity that informs my priorities for today.

A Glimpse of the Big Picture

As I strive to faithfully walk out my daily life, I catch glimpses of the bigger picture. I’m reminded to keep my eyes focused on the end goal, so I can see God in this moment and what He has for me today. My prayer becomes: “Lord, please help me to keep my eyes focused on the end goal, so I will see You in this moment and what You have for me today. Help me to live each day fully for You.”

Reflection Questions

  • What are you waiting for, and is it keeping you from living or motivating you toward eternity?
  • How can you actively anticipate eternal life?
  • What are you putting off, and how can you start living more fully today?
