Embracing Faith in the Darkest Moments
As parents, we strive to protect our children from harm, but despite our best efforts, we cannot shield them from every threat. However, we can introduce them to the ultimate Source of comfort and strength: Christ. By entrusting our kids to Him, we can find solace in the midst of turmoil.
Contrasting Messages
The story of Jairus, a synagogue leader, poignantly illustrates the difficult choices we face as parents. As Jairus and Jesus journeyed to his home, a messenger arrived with devastating news: “Your daughter is dead. Don’t bother the Teacher anymore.” But Jesus reassured Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed” (Luke 8:49-50 NLT). Jairus was torn between the two contrasting messages: one of despair, the other of hope.
The Hard Reality of Parenting
We can do everything right and still find ourselves standing where Jairus stood – facing uncertainty and fear. We can protect, pray, and keep our children safe, yet still encounter unexpected challenges. In those moments, we’re forced to choose between two voices: the voice of despair and the voice of belief.
Choosing Hope
Jairus could have easily given in to despair, but he chose to trust Jesus. As parents, we’re grateful for his decision. For those who have experienced the loss of a child, the story of Jairus can be particularly difficult to hear. We may wonder why Jesus didn’t save our child, just as He saved Jairus’s. God understands our pain and our questions. He, too, has experienced the loss of a child. In fact, He hates death more than we do, which is why He abolished it, bringing life and immortality to light (2 Timothy 1:10).
Hope in the Midst of Suffering
For those who trust God, death is merely a transition to heaven. Our child may not be in our arms, but they are safely in God’s care. If you’re currently standing where Jairus stood, feeling hopeless and alone, remember that God hasn’t forgotten you or your child. Keep entrusting your child to Him, and in His perfect time and way, He will bring restoration and healing.
