Rediscovering Priorities
A chance encounter with a worn-out classic car sparked a journey of self-reflection for me. Despite its rusty exterior and worn interior, I saw potential in it – a project that would allow me to unwind, work with my hands, and connect with my faith. I dubbed it “putts and pray,” a time for solitude, creativity, and spiritual growth.
As I sanded, painted, and tinkered, the car began to take shape. However, finding the right parts proved to be a challenge. That’s when I stumbled upon online communities of like-minded enthusiasts. Car clubs, chat rooms, and forums were filled with people who shared my passion. I spent hours discussing my project with them, but soon realized I was spending more time talking about the car than engaging in my intended “putts and prayer” sessions. My focus had shifted.
The Allure of Distractions
The car became an obsession, and I found myself enthralled by its beauty and the sense of accomplishment that came with restoring it. When it was finally finished, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and self-confidence. But amidst the excitement, I sensed a lingering emptiness. I had inadvertently allowed the car to take center stage, pushing my spiritual pursuits to the sidelines.
A Hard Lesson Learned
I drove the Jaguar a few times, but the joy was short-lived. I eventually sold the car, realizing that I had let it consume me. This experience taught me a valuable lesson: it’s easy to get sidetracked by things that bring us temporary happiness, but it’s essential to maintain our focus on what truly matters.
A Prayer for Clarity
As you navigate your own journey, I offer this prayer: “May you be mindful of the people and things that can create divisions and obstacles, leading you away from the teachings that guide you. Amen.” (Romans 16:17) May we remain vigilant, ensuring that our priorities remain aligned with our values and faith.
