Bridging the Gap: The Surprising Path to a True Relationship with God

The Deceptive Path of Self-Righteousness

A wise saying from Proverbs 14:12 cautions us: “There is a way that appears to be right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.” This warning resonates deeply when we reflect on our own experiences. I recall a humbling moment when I attempted to assemble a lawn mower without consulting the instructions. Confident in my abilities, I forged ahead, only to discover that my creation was flawed. The engine roared to life, but when I shifted gears, it moved in reverse. My pride was wounded, but the lesson was clear: what seems right to us can be woefully wrong.

The Great Divide

This principle holds particularly true in our pursuit of a relationship with God. Humanity has endeavored to bridge the gap between ourselves and the divine through various means: good deeds, religious practices, philosophical musings, and moral codes. However, these efforts are misguided. God did not create us as automatons, programmed to love and obey Him. Rather, He gifted us with free will and the capacity for choice. Tragically, we have exercised this freedom to disobey God, choosing instead to follow our own desires. The consequence is a profound separation from our Creator.

A Funeral’s False Hope

I recently attended a funeral where well-meaning individuals espoused the idea that good works, religious devotion, and moral excellence could secure a place in heaven. But these notions are fundamentally flawed. There is only one authentic path to God, and it is not through human achievement or merit.

The Bridge of Redemption

Jesus Christ, through His crucifixion and resurrection, has bridged the chasm between God and humanity. He bore the penalty for our sin, offering us redemption and reconciliation. This gift is available to all who acknowledge their need, confess their sinfulness, and repent of their wrongdoing. By placing faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we can invite Him into our lives, surrendering to His guidance and wisdom.

A Heartfelt Invitation

So, I ask you: have you made this crucial decision, or are you merely going through the motions of religiosity? Have you invited Jesus into your heart, surrendering to His loving authority? Take a moment to reflect on your spiritual journey. You can begin by praying a simple yet profound prayer: “Lord, I am a sinner, and I repent of my sins. I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose from the grave. I invite Him to come in and control my life through the Holy Spirit, and I receive Him as Lord and Savior.”
