Breaking Free from Sin: The Power of Faith Over Self-Righteousness

Freedom from the Shackles of Sin

Last night, I had the privilege of visiting the Union Gospel Mission, a local organization dedicated to serving the city’s most vulnerable populations. As I shared God’s Word with them, I was struck by the weight of their struggles. One gentleman, in particular, caught my attention. He approached me after the message, tears streaming down his face, and confided in me about his ongoing battle with addiction. He believed that if he could only overcome his addiction, he would be good enough for God.

The Misconception of Self-Righteousness

This gentleman’s sentiment is all too common. Many of us believe that our salvation lies in our ability to be good, to follow the rules, and to overcome our flaws. But this mindset is fundamentally flawed. It’s not about trying to be good; it’s about surrendering to the power of Jesus Christ.

The Power of Faith

As I shared with the gentleman, our strength comes not from our own efforts, but from the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to overcome. The law, rather than being a means of salvation, serves as a guide, leading us to Christ, where we find true justification through faith.

A Prayer for Liberation

My prayer for you this week is that you would break free from the chains of sin and accept the promise of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. May you understand that before faith came, you were held captive by the law, waiting for faith to be revealed. May you know that the law was put in place to lead you to Christ, that you might be justified by faith. And when that faith has come, may you walk in the freedom of being a child of God, baptized into Christ, and clothed with His righteousness.

Scriptural Foundation

As Galatians 3:22-29 reminds us, “The Scripture has bound everyone over to disobedience so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe… You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, and all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” May this truth set you free from the prison of sin and empower you to live a life of significance.
