The Noble Pursuit of God
A Message of Affirmation
I’ve always been drawn to a particular bumper sticker that resonates deeply with me: “WISE MEN STILL SEEK HIM.” This simple phrase conveys two profound truths that have far-reaching implications for our spiritual journeys.
The Dignity of the Searcher
Firstly, the sticker suggests that those who seek God are wise. This affirmation is empowering, as it acknowledges that our pursuit of God is a noble endeavor. The fact that God has intentionally concealed Himself, inviting us to search for Him, underscores our inherent value and intelligence. We are capable of recognizing and responding to His presence, and this realization elevates our search to a royal pursuit.
The Promise of Discovery
Secondly, the sticker implies that those who seek God will ultimately find Him. This promise is rooted in scripture, which assures us that God rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). This understanding should inspire patience and compassion towards those who are still searching. Rather than criticizing their misunderstandings or incomplete knowledge, we should respect their journey and trust that God will reveal Himself in due time.
The Art of Listening
As we interact with seekers, it’s essential to emulate Jesus’ approach. He didn’t bombard His audience with information, but rather shared truth in measured doses, often using parables and questions to encourage deeper reflection. By listening carefully and affirming the fragments of truth they’ve already discovered, we can create a safe space for growth and exploration. This approach not only honors the dignity of the searcher but also preserves the integrity of the truth itself.
Protecting the Sacred
Jesus’ method also protected the sacredness of His message. He didn’t force-feed His teachings to those who were unprepared or unwilling to listen. Instead, He encouraged His audience to engage actively with His words, often saying, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” This approach allowed His listeners to absorb and process His teachings at their own pace, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the truth.
By embracing this mindset, we can create an environment where seekers feel valued, respected, and empowered to continue their pursuit of God. And as we do, we’ll come to realize that the true wisdom lies not in having all the answers, but in humbly seeking Him with an open heart and mind.
