Unshakeable Salvation: God’s Unforgettable Promise

The Unshakeable Foundation of Our Salvation

God’s promise to us is a remarkable thing. In Genesis 9:15, He declares, “I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” Notice the striking form of this promise. God doesn’t say, “If you remember and follow my covenant, then I won’t destroy the earth.” Instead, He takes full responsibility, saying, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come” (Genesis 9:12-13).

A Covenant That Depends on God’s Memory

Our security rests not on our fragile memories, but on God’s infinite and unchangeable memory. It’s not about us remembering God; it’s about God remembering us. This fundamental shift in perspective brings immense comfort. Our salvation isn’t secured by our efforts or memories, but by divine power.

The Almighty Strength of God’s Covenant

Even the smallest aspects of our salvation, which we might think are left to us, are actually guarded by God’s almighty strength. He doesn’t leave the remembrance of His covenant to our fallible memories, which might forget. Instead, He has written our names on the palms of His hands, ensuring that He will never forget us. Just as He was with Israel in Egypt, watching over them with the blood on the door frames, so too is He with us, watching over us with the blood of Christ.

Looking to Jesus, Secured by God’s Gaze

While looking to Jesus brings us joy and peace, it’s God’s gaze upon Jesus that secures our salvation. It’s impossible for God to look at Christ, our bleeding Savior, and then be angry with us for sins already punished in Him. Our salvation isn’t upheld by our own efforts, but by the Lord alone. We should indeed remember the covenant, but we do so through divine grace, not our own power.

The Beautiful and Everlasting Covenant

The hinge of our safety doesn’t hang on our remembering the covenant; it hangs on God’s remembering us. And so, the covenant is a beautiful and everlasting one. We can rest assured that our salvation is secured by God’s infinite power and love, not by our own fleeting memories or efforts.
